Abandoned MD 404
Ridgely, MD

Known as Saathoff Road near Ridgely, this former section of MD 404 features something that you don't find often on Delmarva's abandoned highways... original single slab concrete.

This section of MD 404 was probably constructed sometime in the 1930s.  It was bypassed in the 1950s, when MD 404 was reconstructed and widened.

The beginning of the abandoned section... located just off of Saathoff Road.  The concrete disappears into the trees, though the original right-of-way meets MD 404 on the other side of the trees.

A look at the exposed concrete roadbed.

The concrete is constructed in 1930s fashion... with a single slab and narrow asphalt shoulders.

Caroline County has reconstructed this particular curve, and has routed Saathoff Road on a softer right-of-way.  Thankfully... they left the original grade exposed.

A closer look at the original carriageway.  The concrete has held up nicely over the past 70+ years.

Part of the abandoned section of MD 404 has been recomissioned.  It was recently signed as MD 485, and serves a few houses that remain on the stretch of road.
