Market Street
Pocomoke City, MD

Once the Pocomoke City bypass was constructed in 1959, mainline US 13 was
routed along that alignment. The original alignment through the heart of downtown Pocomoke
City was re-designated as Business US 13.
Once a bustling city center, Pocomoke City's downtown business district has suffered the fate
of what many other downtowns have become... a shell of it's former self. Along with the newer
US 13 bypass outside of town came big box stores, fast food restaurants, gas stations, and
supermarkets. And with the lack of traffic flowing through it's downtown, many of the shops
along Business US 13 have either closed, or moved outside of town.
With the lack of traffic, the lack of needed traffic signals downtown have caused the 2
signaled intersections to be put into "flash" mode.
However, not all is bad with Business 13 in Pocomoke City. The route features an antique
drawbridge across the scenic Pocomoke River. Built in 1921, and reconstructed in the mid
1990s, this bridge still functions as an active crossing of the river.
