Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway

DE 1 parallels  US 13 for most of it's trek from Dover to the C&D Canal.  With toll sections around Dover and near the C&D canal bridge, it is a welcome relief for travelers along the US 13 corridor.

The DE 1 "relief route" was built in several sections over a period of about 15 or so years, with more details about the actual construction here.  With several pages dedicated to the history and planning of this route, I'm not going to get into any specific details.  However, this is more of a pictorial view of traveling on DE 1.

Puncheon Run Connector

Interchange with DE 10 and former US 113.  US 113 had been truncated to Milford, though DelDOT hasn't removed any of the US 113 shields along the Puncheon Run Connector at that time.

Crossing over the mainline DE 1, and entering the northbound lanes.

Dover Bypass to Exit 119

Once DE 10 (and former US 113) leave the DE 1 alignment near the Dover Air Force Base, DE 1 becomes a tolled limited access expressway.

DelDOT is in the process of making improvements to the Dover toll plaza... adding express E-ZPass lanes and improving signage.  Construction should wrap up by the end of summer 2004.

Newly installed sign bridges directing traffic to the new E-ZPass express lanes... in the same locations as the above photos.

Approaching the Dover toll plaza.  Tolls are $1 for passenger vehicles and have E-ZPass lanes.

As mentioned earlier, construction is in progress to facilitate express E-ZPass lanes and make general improvements to the toll plaza itself.

Exit 104... interchange with US 13.  There is also a connector with DE 8 and DE 1 at this interchange.

Typical views of DE 1 around Dover and Smyrna.  This section of highway travels through the heart of agriculture in Kent and New Castle counties.

Signage for Exit 114 to US 13.  This interchange also serves as a connection to DE 6 and DE 300.

Continuing on DE 1 around Smyrna.

Exit 119... interchange with US 13.  This is where DE 1 used to merge with a enter a multiplex with US 13 until new section between exits 119 and 140 was constructed.

This is also where DE 1 takes on it's newest section which opened in 2003.

Exit 119 to Exit 136

Traveling along the newest section of DE 1, which opened in 2003.  Again, scenery along this stretch is mostly forests and farmland... highlighting agriculture throughout the area.

Unusual all-caps mileage sign.

US 13 parallels DE 1 for a short time, making for an interesting arrangement of highways.

Exit 136... interchange with DE 299.  DE 299 serves as a connector with US 13.

Exit 136 to the C & D Canal Bridge

DE 299 overpass.

Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway dedication sign.  Several of these are posted throughout the length of the highway.

Mileage sign approaching Exit 142.

Exit 142... interchange with US 13 and DE 896.  DE 896 serves as a connector to US 301.

Cars leaving the expressway at this location must pay a toll... prices are shown in the third pic.

Toll plaza at the C & D Canal bridge.  Again, a toll of $1 is charged to passenger cars.

This toll plaza was constructed with high speed E-ZPass lanes in both directions, as well as conventional toll lanes.

Southern approach to the C & D Canal bridge.  The arch span of US 13's St. George's Bridge, the original lone crossing of the canal at this location, is in the background.

Rounding the curve toward the bridge.

The southern end of the bridge, along with signage for it.

The cable stayed C & D Canal Bridge.  Opened in 1995, it is a most impressive structure, and is the only cable stayed bridge on the Delmarva peninsula.

Notice that throughout the span, lights along the side railing are missing.  Some to appear to have been forcibly removed... either by wind or car accidents.

Continuing to cross along the northbound span.  Notice more missing lights.

The northern end of the bridge.  This marks the end of DE 1's trek along the Delmarva peninsula.
