Dupont Highway
DE
404 takes over where MD 404 leaves off... serving as a east/west
corridor from Wye Mills, MD to Five Points, DE. A popular
route to the Delaware beach resorts, DE 404 often suffers from traffic
back-ups during the summer months. According to Alex
Nitzman's Delaware Highways, a
limited access corridor had been considered in the 1980s for this
section of DE 404. However, due to local opposition, it was
cancelled. DE 404's
alignment remained mostly unchanged, until 1999. A section of
Alternate DE 404 (Newton Road) was upgraded, and DE 404's alignment was
routed on it to allow traffic headed to the Delaware beaches to bypass
the town of Bridgeville. DE 404's original alignment through
Bridgeville was commissioned as Business DE 404.
DE
404 tends to be multiplexed with several other highways throughout its
trek across Delaware. DE 18, US 9, and US 13 all share
highway real estate with DE 404 at some point along the way.
As
they say... all things must come to an end. DE 404 ends at DE
1, in Five Points.
