| Former US 50 / US
213 Unsigned MD 731
Vienna, MD
 This portion of
US 50 (former US 213) was bypassed in 1991, with the opening of the new
4-lane route around Vienna. This portion of old US 50, unlike
it's now orphaned half on the other side of the Nanticoke River,
remains in active service as unsigned MD 731. This was the
final 2-lane section of US 50 to remain in active service on the
Delmarva peninsula, until it was rerouted onto the new Vienna bypass in
1991.

 | Views of the former US 50 crossing of the Nanticoke
River... shortly before it was demolished. (Special thanks
to Scott Kozel for these pics!!) |

Present day MD 731 at it's terminus. A
bascule drawbridge once crossed the Nanticoke River at this location,
and met up with another section of old US 50/213 across the river,
which is now abandoned. |

An exit for MD 331 goes off to the right.
This highway used to carry a high volume of traffic before it was
bypassed, especially during the summer months with traffic going to
Ocean City, MD. |

 |
The intersection with MD 331. A traffic
signal used to guard this intersection. It was removed the
same time the US 50 designation was removed. MD 331 used to
be the former US 213. |

Further up the road. Another former (and
original) alignment of US 213/US 50 exits off to the right. |

More
of former US 213/US 50. The highway now ends at an
intersection
with the new US 50 bypass. It also, once again, meets up with
it's original alignment right in the last picture. |

 |
Another pic showing the original US 213/US
50. The original alignment had the highway going through the
heart of the town. |
