Abandoned MD 14
Secretary, MD

In the early 1970s, a new crossing was built over the Warwick River in Secretary, MD.  Due to the limited amount of right-of-way, the new bridge was built in same location of the old one.

Underneath the new bridge lies the former approach to the old span, now removed.  Instead of removing the old pavement, bridge pilings were driven through the old roadbed.

Most of the old pavement, a former alignment of MD 14, remains intact... complete with center lane markings.

Bridge pilings driven directly through the old roadbed.

Note that this bridge uses a combination of wooden and steel support pilings.

View across the Warwick River.  The former Warwick River crossing was located here.

Flooding from 2003's Hurricane Isabel caused damage to the old pavement.  This gives you a chance to see an almost geological view of different types of asphalt used here over the years.

More views of MD 14's former alignment.

Note the center lane markings, which have held up nicely after being shielded in the shadow of the new bridge for almost 35 years.
