Gateway Ocean City,
MD to MD 90 Interchange
US
50, one of the few remaining trans-continental US highways, begins it
westerly trek to Sacramento, California here... in Ocean City,
MD. US 50 takes on many forms throughout its journey west...
everywhere from a multi-lane freeway in California, to a 2-lane
mountain road in West Virginia. Here on Delmarva though... US
50 is one of the "main drags" serving Maryland's Eastern
Shore. US 50 is a divided highway throughout its length on
Delmarva, with full freeway sections on Kent Island and around
Salisbury. One expressway section, between Salisbury and
Berlin, offers very few at-grade intersections, and no direct driveway
connections. Another such section exists around Vienna.
This
page focuses on westbound US 50 from Ocean City to the MD 90
interchange near Berlin.
 | Here is where it all begins... US 50 and
Philadelphia Avenue (MD 528). MD-SHA commemorates the
beginning of US 50 with a LGS (little green sign) showing mileage to
Sacramento, CA. A similar sign was posted by CalTrans in
Sacramento showing mileage to Ocean City. Personal note... I
still plan to drive this route in its entirety eventually. |
 | Crossing the Sinepuxent Bay on the Harry Kelley
Memorial Drawbridge. This crossing is quite active for boats,
however the bridge maintains a strict opening schedule during the
summer months. This is the gateway to Ocean City for many
easterly-traveling tourists. The
State of Maryland has recent allotted money to study a replacement
solution for this bridge, as it is showing its age. |
 | Intersection with Golf Course Road. This
part of West Ocean City is home to many "outlet"-type stores and
restaurants. |
 | Intersection with MD 611 (Stephen Decatur
Highway). MD 611 travels to Assateague Island... and features
one of Maryland's few undeveloped beaches at Assateague State Park. |
 | Intersection with Keyser Point Road. |
 | Intersection with MD 707 (Old Bridge
Road). MD 707 is US 50's (and former US 213's) routing to
Ocean City. Formerly a railroad right-of-way, US 213 used to
enter Ocean City on a converted railroad bridge on Wicomico Street and
Philadelphia Avenue. |
 | Traveling US 50 (westbound) toward
Berlin. MD 707, US 50's (and former US 213's) former
alignment, serves as a service road on the right side of the highway. |
 | Intersection with Walmart store near
Berlin. Signals only affect eastbound US 50. There
is no signal on westbound US 50. Maryland has quite a few
intersections like this one. |
 | Intersection with MD 589 (Racetrack
Road). MD 589 serves as the "cut-off" road between US 50, MD
90, and US 113. It also serves as Ocean Pines' main drag. |
 | Continuing on US 50 (westbound) toward Berlin. |
 | Intersection with MD 452 (Friendship Lane). |
 | Interchange with MD 346 (Old Ocean City
Boulevard). MD 346 was US 50's (and former US 213's) original
alignment through Berlin. |
 | Interchange with US 113 (Worcester
Highway). This interchange replaced an at-grade intersection
(which is now used by MD 818). Exit ramps going to and
exiting from US 113 also have railroad crossing on them... the only
such occurrence I've seen in Maryland. |
 | Intersection with MD 818 (Main Street).
MD 818 was US 113's original alignment through Berlin. |
 | The beginning of the "expressway" portion of US
50. Also shows typical Maryland mileage sign. |
 | Intersection with MD 346 (Old Ocean City
Road). MD 346 crosses US 50 here, and serves the communities
of Pittsville, Pasronsburg, and Whaleyville. Again, MD 346
was US 50's (and US 213's) original alignment, and was bypassed in the
late '60s. |
 | Traveling westbound toward the MD 90 interchange. |
 | Interchange with MD 90. Only traffic
merging from MD 90 westbound has access to US 50 westbound. |
